"The Artist Behind the Brush" By Desiree Maher

Not many artists get the chance to offer such a time honored tradition where their canvas is the body and the end product gives an audience the chance to travel into an inspiring new world for that moment in time. Through the touch of a brush or sponge & countless layers of colorful paint, this beautiful transformation of the face and body takes place with the hope that people will once again become in tune with their bodies and give themselves the opportunity to accept it for all its beauty... both inside and out.

Rachel Deboer has continuously been supporting this message of self worth, self acceptance and self love through her face and body painting for over ten years. It all began as a need for her own self expression and while living on the East Coast, she acquired a taste for the urban, surrealistic, and abstract characters that were all around her. She gained her experience as a costume designer and body painter at the "Dream Theater" in Los Angeles and came to Maui to make her dream of transforming those who were willing to share her vision into a reality. Fabulous Faces was born and her business has inspired both adults & children to embrace who they are, strive to be who they want to be, and love themselves as the divine canvas that they are.

She is deeply involved with the body painting community all over the world and this community inspires her to continue her work and grow as an artist. Hawaii has been her home for quite sometime now and the Polynesian tattoo traditions mixed with the indigenous feel on the island has sparked a new realm of body painting.... black light art. She felt that she was ready for a new level of expression and the magic of black light inspired her to create this feeling on the body. Black light makes the invisible visible and it is absolutely visually stunning.

To honor her home & community on Maui, Rachel has presented a magical theater show called "Birth of Tiki" which tells the story of a simple tiki carver and his journey with the Aumakua. She chose body painting to honor the body art traditions of Polynesia and black light as way to represent the mystical nature of the Gods & Goddesses in the show in order to take the audience out of time & out of the present. Black light wipes away the idea of what race the actors' are and renders all humans, no matter what their ethnic background,  as the archetypes and energetic essences they are representing. Rachel knows that all human beings are connected by divine energy and the common intentions to spread love & aloha.

Rachel offers her face & body painting for many different events ranging from children's parties, theatrical shows, corporate product launches, business grand openings, fashion shows, theme parties and more. She has been focusing back on theater production and recently launched Next Level Productions to promote her black light theater.
